Reconstruction of the main runway at Delta’s Blake Field began on Monday, September 10. The base of the 30-year old runway has experienced some failure that will be addressed during the construction process. Updates to the runway will include a new taxiway from the west end of the runway back to the main taxiway, as well as a new runway lighting system. The new lighting system will have high intensity edge lights and runway end identifier lights (REIL) so that pilots will have better visibility during foggy or poor weather conditions.
Construction will close the main runway for approximately three months. In the meantime, Delta County Road & Bridge constructed a dirt crosswind runway this last summer that is open for use. A temporary taxiway was also constructed back to the main ramp, allowing pilots to refuel their planes or to access airplane hangers.
