Integrated Solid Waste Management (Landfill)

Delta County owns and operates a Municipal Solid Waste facility for the residents of Delta County. The Abode Buttes Landfill west of Eckert was constructed and opened by the County in 1996. The County also operates a trash transfer station east of Hotchkiss which has some restrictions on the type and amount of trash accepted for transfer.

Landfill Fee Schedule (effective January 4, 2016)

Accepted Wastes
All acceptable municipal solid wastes and load sizes can be deposited at the Adobe Buttes Landfill. There are restrictions to load size (maximum of 4 yds of waste) and material accepted at the North Fork Transfer Station. Call the North Fork Transfer Station for details on restrictions.

Conditions for Waste to be Accepted
All loads to either location must be secured or double the normal dumping fees shall be charged. The gatekeepers may inspect your loads for restricted materials. The gatekeepers can deny the dumping of any load found to carry unacceptable materials or for other reasons determined at the gate.

Temporary Closures
High winds and/or severe weather conditions may require temporary and unexpected closures of both the Adobe Buttes Landfill and the North Fork Transfer Station.

To find out if the Landfill is closed due to weather conditions, please call 835-7999. Once the Landfill closes because of weather conditions, it will remain closed until the next day.

County-Wide Pilot Recycling Program
The Pilot Recycling Program had its kick-off day on February 2, 2012. The pilot recycling center’s location is at the County’s Integrated Solid Waste Transfer Station located three miles southeast of Hotchkiss off of Hwy 92 on K50 Road. It is open to all Delta County residents and businesses at no cost to you at the Transfer Station (maximum of 4 yards of solid waste trash per load).
The recycling center will accept a fairly wide assortment of recyclables to include:
  • corrugated cardboard,
  • mixed paper to include office paper, newspaper, shredded paper, paper board, magazines, junk mail, phone books, and
  • clear and all colors of glass bottles and jars, aluminum, steel, and tin cans, and finally plastics #1-7.
The Transfer Station’s hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and recycling hours are 8:00a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Please remember that the Transfer Station has primarily been a conduit for the North Fork neighborhoods to get their solid waste trash to the County’s Adobe Buttes Landfill without having to make the long drive themselves.

Except for large scrap metal, vehicle batteries and used oil, all other material accepted here was on its way to the Landfill. Therefore, if you plan on bringing a combined load of recyclables and solid waste trash to the facility, please keep your recyclables separated from the solid waste trash. The Operator will be able to continue to make his volume assessment much faster that way, charge you for disposing only of the solid waste trash, and get you on your way.

Please just follow the Operator’s instructions and the signs and the process should be fairly simple to get you in and out while turning former Landfill waste into a recyclable commodity.
